Dodging Google sheriff

Attempts to improve a web site ranking are called "search engine optimisation" (SEO). According to the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO), in 2006 this represented an industry worth $US9.4 billion ($A11.7 billion). The dark underside of the industry is a more dubious or deceptive practice, known as black-hat SEO. One of the most influential web search engine experts is Matt Cutts, a Google software engineer who offers SEO tips at www.mattcutts.com/blog/, with his weblog ranked the 84th-most popular worldwide, according to Technorati.
